The Ultimate Guide To Getting The Best Boiler Installation

A boiler is crucial for the heating in your home. Buying a new boiler tends to be a decision that most people make in a hurry. This is because usually your boiler has broken down and you need to get your hot water and the central heating working as soon as possible. Getting a new boiler really requires careful consideration of several factors. Here’s a detailed guide to help you out if you’re considering a new boiler installation.

How long does a boiler installation take?

A new boiler installation can vary in length depending on many different variants, typically it will be 1-3 days.

If you currently have an old type boiler and are upgrading to a gas combi boiler installation time can be up to 3 days. However, this can increase to up to 6 days if you are having a full system installed including radiators. If you’re having an oil boiler rather than a gas boiler, the installation may take longer.

To ensure you are aware of the timeline and are prepared for our visit we will complete a free survey of the property before the boiler installation to assess the complexity of the work and how long we expect it to take.

Things to consider before buying a boiler

What is the size and output requirement?
This is hands down the biggest factor you need to keep in mind before buying a new boiler for your home. The power output of the boiler you buy represents its capacity to cope with your home’s needs for hot water. This depends on how many bathrooms and radiators you have as homes with higher demands for central heating will need boilers that have higher kW output.

The size and output of the new boiler must also match the dimensions of your house for a comfortable fit.

  • 24-27kW boilers will be suitable for 1-2 bedroom house with 1 bathroom and 10 radiators
  • 28-34kW boilers will be suitable for 3-4 bedroom house with 1-2 bathrooms and 15 radiators
  • 35-42kW boilers will be suitable for 4+ bedroom house with more than 2 bathrooms and 20 radiators

Where do you want it to be located?
Picking a boiler will also depend on where you plan to place it in your home because this affects how your home looks. You could save money and time if you decide to do boiler installations in the same location as your old boiler, but you may find that another location of the house works better in some cases.

How reliable is it?
You want to get a new boiler that’s reliable because boiler breakdowns are not only inconvenient, but they also cost a lot to fix. You don’t want to be freezing at home while trying to get together some money to repair your boiler just because you didn’t invest in a reliable one.

Is it energy efficient?
With a boiler that’s energy efficient; you can save money on energy bills and cut your wastage of resources. You can also benefit from other features on energy efficient boilers that allow you to make adjustments as per your heating preferences.

What type will be best for your home?
There are 3 main types of boilers and each has its pros and cons. Knowledge on the types of boilers and benefits/disadvantages of each will help you make an informed decision about which type would be best suited to your house. We’ll elaborate on these types a little later.

Even when you’ve considered all these factors, you should still get the opinion of an expert to gain clarity on the matter.

When’s the best time to get a new boiler?

Boilers typically last for 10-15 years so if you’re approaching the year mark, it’s time to get a new boiler. Other factors that signal it may be time to get a new boiler:

  • If it’s cheaper to just buy a new boiler than to get repairs done on your old boiler. Some signs of boiler breakdown are:
    • Your home isn’t getting adequately heated
    • Popping, knocking, or hissing sounds are coming from your boiler
    • Regular repairs need to be done on your boiler
    • Water leaks from your boiler
  • If you want your new boiler to be at a different location of the house so that you benefit from central heating source that’s more energy efficient. In such situations, you can opt to upgrade your boiler system at a new location.
  • If you find that the system you currently use can’t keep up with your needs for hot water and heating so it makes more sense to get a boiler with greater kW output.
  • If you currently use a boiler that has a low rating for energy efficiency, it makes sense for you to get a boiler with higher energy efficiency ratings. This way, you can save on energy bills and benefit from several government schemes offered.
  • If you want to sell your house or offer it on rent, installing a new boiler could raise property value and interest more buyers/tenants in comparison to houses with old, energy inefficient boilers.

What types of boilers are there?

3 types of boilers exist:

  • Combi boiler
  • System boiler
  • Conventional boiler

The type of boiler best suited for your house will depend on factors like your needs for hot water; space in the home; energy efficiency requirements; as well as whether or not you have a gas connection.

Combi boiler
If you rent or own a small apartment, chances are, you’re working with a combi boiler. As the name suggest, combination boilers provide hot water and heat on the fly. There is no waiting for hot air or hot water.

Combi boilers are smaller than other types. Therefore, they make perfect sense for smaller properties. The water is not stored like other boiler types, so you don’t have to run the hot water before actually receiving it. Despite the increased efficiency, combi boilers are usually cheaper than other models and typically cost between £770 and £1540. This is just the cost of the boiler and does not include any labour costs. Installation of combi boilers is quick, cheap, and easy when compared to system boilers.

If you’ve got a large family where many outlets are used simultaneously, combi boilers may show weak flow rates. Their performance also depends on pipe diameter so if the pipe entering the property is under 22mm in diameter, combi boilers aren’t the ideal choice.

System boiler
If you have more than one bathroom, you should consider a system boiler. These boilers come with a hot water tank, but all other components are built into the boiler.

System boilers are able to power multiple outlets together at mains pressure but don’t require a cistern. They’re neat, quick to install, and come with main components built in to be able to meet greater demands. The fact that they don’t need a separate tank to be installed in the loft makes them use up less space. Higher flow rates are also possible with system boilers.

The drawback with these is that overuse can result in running out of hot water and they’re also prone to certain pressure loss issues.

System boilers are typically used in average-sized homes and their cost is a bit more than combination boilers. System boiler prices range from £1100 to £1850.

Conventional boiler
Conventional boilers need to have stored water in a hot water cylinder are suitable for homes with an open vented heating system. They offer high flow rates of water from taps with instant availability of hot water. This works best for a power shower and gallons of water can easily be heated and used.

The drawback is that they involve the use of more parts and pipework. They’re also costlier than other boilers to install and can suffer from low pressure in case the location of the cistern isn’t high enough.

These boilers are ideal for larger homes or homes that use a lot of hot water at the same time. Additionally, if you have an old radiator system or are replacing a regular boiler, you’ll have to install the same type moving forward. Because standard boilers can handle more pressure, they are on the expensive side ranging from £2300 to £5700.

Getting a new boiler quote

While getting a new boiler may not be cheap, it’s an investment worth making. The cost of a new boiler is affected by factors like:

  • Type of boiler
  • Size of boiler
  • Complexity of use
  • Process of installation

You can get a realistic quote for a new boiler from us online, keeping in mind factors like:

  • Your budget
  • Size of your home
  • Central heating needs

Apart from giving you a new boiler quote, we can also make recommendations for specific brands, types, and models for you to choose from.

Pay monthly boiler finance

Boiler installations can be expensive and we understand that. This is why we offer flexible boiler finance options that customers can benefit from. If buying a boiler on finance is something you haven’t considered before, you may just want to start looking into it.

With our finance plans, you can make monthly repayments conveniently without it burning a hole in your wallet. The finance plans vary in years depending on your budget requirements and come with exciting interest rates and deposit plans.

You no longer need to make a one-time payment for your boiler. You can, instead, spread it out over monthly instalments, making financing a convenient option for you.

Why use a local gas safe engineer?

When you’re thinking about boiler installations, it’s imperative that you get a local gas safe engineer to do the job. Illegal fitters will not only do a bad job of installation, but they can also put you at greater risk resulting from leaks in system installations.

A certified Gas Safe engineer will make sure all legislations are adhered to, materials are brought, home surfaces are covered, and installation is done safely. They’ll be able to inspect your house and key considerations like number of radiators, bathrooms, current boiler location. They’ll be able to suggest the right boiler for your house as well as tell you what it’ll cost you.

Always look up your local gas safe engineer on the Gas Safe Register to check their qualifications and if they’re specialised to conduct boiler replacement and installations. You can verify their details using the number on their Gas Safe ID card.
